Shaping Strategic Vision and Aligning UX Practice

A core responsibility of a Director of User Experience is to help company leadership create and execute a strategic vision, by providing guidance to possibilities and pitfalls in the digital product landscape. I help CEOs, VPs and Product Managers align the company’s Digital Product Roadmap to its core business goals. I help ensure the roadmap has been prioritized to best support the delivery of high value features to users, on a consistent cadence. I then lead both internal teams and contributing design agencies to deliver best of class digital product design.

UX Process and Best Practices

Understanding and implementing UX best practices into a team’s normal process is crucial for that team’s ongoing success., Effective process provides team members a structural lattice on which to build their work and helps ensure they can focus on the core UX problems to be solved. Collaboration with Engineering, Product, SMEs and practitioners of other disciplines ensures the delivery of highly effective and usable features.

Positioning Individuals for Success & Professional Growth

Leadership of a team requires understanding each team member as a unique individual. Each team member has a particular combination of capabilities and challenges, and supporting that individual in doing their best work requires fully understanding their unique fingerprint. I believe that getting team members to fully invest themselves in the future of the company requires that one reciprocate that investment in them as individuals. Working to ensure that my direct reports are positioned to do their best quality work, and for individual, professional success, has always been a core mission of mine.

 

Design Practice

 

Universal UX Principles

Good User Experience is a result of the application of universal design principles and practices. These core values entail understanding as much as possible about users as human beings, and to understand their context, which frames their experience. Personas and User Stories inform this understanding, and allow us to exercise empathy for the user, and to always keep them centered in one’s design practice.

SAAS Design Best Practices

While there are universal design principles, there are also a great deal of design patterns and considerations which are unique to SAAS platform design. Creating best of class SAAS design work and experience requires having a broad familiarity with current best practices in the space, from responsive design for data-dense list and detail pages, to asynchronously connect interaction design, to any number of small interactions which provide a user with a fluid and seamless experience with the product. 

 

Partnering with Product & Engineering

Great digital product design practice is inherently collaborative. Getting features built requires the contributions of product managers, subject matter experts, developers, and others. It is part of the UX designers job to synthesize Product Mangers’ complex and varied input, into feature design which is achievable by Engineering. Proactively soliciting and incorporating input and concerns from colleagues should be an explicit part of a designer’s workflow and practice. Doing UX in agile, engineering-driven environments requires flexibility and compromise, in order deliver features on tight timelines.

User Testing and Iteration

The proof is in the pudding. Watching users interact with features is the only way to check assumptions and validate hypotheses about how users perceive them.  We do this both during design, with prototypes and usability testing, and also by reviewing session video during thoughtfully managed feature flag releases to key customers. These practices generate both validation that design thinking was valid, and also critical insight into ways features could be further improved further. Users are every bit as much a part of the experience as the interface itself; listening to them is critical.

• Android Kid-safe Browser App: Designed UI for kid-safe browser and associated parent controls. UX for parent controls allowing flexible management of child-facing content and customized parent whitelisting of web content.

• Created Mobile Adaptive/Responsive CMS component library: Designed extensive set of components for the Adobe CQ CMS with adaptive and responsive behaviors to enable efficient publishing across desktop, tablet and mobile devices. Components include: column, carousel, banner, paragraph, accordion, video, docking navigation, popup, slideshow, etc.

• Developed UX for mobile-optimized leapfrog.com, including catalog, PDPs, checkout flow, navigation.

• LeapBand Fitness Monitor dashboard& connection software set up flow, introductory coachmark sequence, user registration, Activity Dashboardand device controls.

• Developed test protocols, scripts and prototypes specification for usability lab tests of catalog way finding and filter mechanisms, and catalog, PDP and Quickview interaction designs. Built clickable prototypes using Axure. Compiled and interpreted findings and developed recommendations.

• Mobile-optimized MyPals toy set up site: mobile site for personalization of electronic toy, utilizing delivery of data and MP3 audio files via analog output on mobile device headphone jack. Includes registration sequence, contextual help, management of device audio profiles.
